Andro Inscription

Andro is a Scheduled Caste village situated 27 kms east of Imphal, and lies along the eastern foothills of the Nongmaiching hill range. The inscribed stone at Andro is located at the Lai Haraopham complex of Lord Panam Ningthou, the governing diety of Andro village, in the centre of the same village.

bullet The texture of the inscribed stone is of medium fine sandstone. The stone is 44 x 55 sq.cms. in size. there are twelve inscribed lines in archaic Meitei script. The form of language is in archaic Manipuri.
bullet The inscribed stone is dated to 1744 Saka (1822 A.D.). It is the royal edict of Maharaj Jai Singh (1822 A.D.) who ruled Manipur for a year during the period of Chahi Taret Khuntakpa.
bullet The text of the inscription reflects a proclamation of the King to the villagers of Andro to pay tribute to the King in lieu of protection to be provided by the State and the extension of the King's judiciary to protected villages in providing in providing justice and assistance. The total area protected is 4 x 3.5 sq. m.
