Megalithic Monuments (Menhir) at Ningel-I

bullet There are two megalithic monuments (menhir) at Ningel, of which the first is located around 200m to the north of the inscribed stone of Maharaja Garibaniwaza. Ningel is located in Thoubal District, and is 35 kms to the south-east of Imphal on the Imphal - Chandrakhong road.
bullet The texture of the monolith is of medium fine sandstone. It is believed that the monolith was erected on the same day as when the inscribed stone of Maharaja Garibaniwaza was erected to commemorate the inauguration of Ningel marketplace in 1744  A.D. The underlying belief is that the monolith is the companion to the inscribed stone, and at the same time is regarded as the image of the governing diety of the marketplace, and the direction to which the menhir is placed in relation to the inscribed stone is believed to indicate the direction to which the inscribed stone faces. as the menhir is placed to the north of the inscribed stone, so it is inferred that the stone faces north. The protected area is 3 x 2.2 sq.m.
