Samadhi of Maharaj Gambhir Singh

The Samadhi is located at Langthabal, some 8 Kms south of Imphal on the Indo-Myanmar highway. It is erected at the cremation ground of Maharaj Gambhir Singh (1821 and 1825-34 A.D.), also known by the name of Chinglen Nongdrenkhomba. It is believed that he died on 9 January in 1834.

The structure of the Samadhi is simple in form. The walls are plain and has no ventilation. The roof is dome-shaped without any decor. The facade of the Samadhi faces east. The only access to the inner sanctum is through the opening in the front. The walls of the Samadhi rises 1.62 m above ground level and meets the curved eaves of the roof. The top of the roof has crowning cape upon which is fixed a Kalasha.
The style of the construction is familiar to the Bengal hut-type of the 17th/188th century. The noticing point is the sloping roof adopted to resist excessive rainfall and to prevent damage to the structure caused by over growth of wild vegetation. The protected area is 45.60 x 29.10 sq. m.
